What would you like to explore when visiting a city?
If I would like to experience local culture of the city, my itinerary must include visiting night markets. It’s fantastic to get a real local taste of the city.
What do you think of the selling points of some night markets?
They are renowned for street food, shopping and live entertainment. You can enjoy local eats, go for souvenir shopping or interact with local performers at the markets.
What makes night markets special?
To experience the spectacle of the city’s local life, I think night markets are undoubtedly the budget-friendly travelling spots. They’re not only welcomed by tourists but also locals.
What are the characteristics of night markets?
Street vendors line in the markets selling food, clothes, bags, antiques, handicrafts and more. You can bargain with the owners to get good deals on an impressive range of souvenirs. There’s no harm in asking for a discount and bargaining is common.
Why is the food so attractive at night markets?
The streets are filled with different types of street food with tempting smells and delicious flavours. Your taste buds will not be disappointed by local foods.
Did you try a variety of dishes at night markets?
Yes. You’ll be excited with the challenging food marathon. As street food is small in portion, you can enjoy many dishes without getting full easily.
How do you select from a myriad of street food?
I’ll go for those stalls with long queues because they are good indication of quality food. Although some may not look appealing, they’re worth trying.
Can you name some of your favourite street food?
Definitely. In Hong Kong, I love curry fish balls, siu mai and beef offal. In Taiwan, I like grilled squid, pork belly bun and oyster omelet. In Thailand, I’m attracted to the grilled pork, papaya salad and boat noodles.
Did you browse or purchase any piece of art at some night markets?
Yes. I joined one inspiring night market showcasing the work of artists, potters, glass artists and jewellery makers. They demonstrated their amazing skills and craftsmanship before our eyes.
Did you enjoy the game booths at some night markets?
Yes. There were various game booths offering new gaming experience. Night market is a place where flavours, traditions and fun combine to give me the perfect taste of the city.
Do you believe in fortune tellers at some night markets?
People are interested to know the past and improve the fortune in the future by showing their palms or face to the fortune tellers. It may be more for fun no matter it’s accurate or not.
Have you chatted with any fortune teller before?
I would love to. However, some popular stalls required queueing for more than half hour. I’ve spent more time in exploring tasty food instead.
Did you find something unique at night markets?
Yes. I was impressed by performers using their unique singing style to present Cantonese Opera in the street of Hong Kong. It’s Temple Street Night Market located at Yau Ma Tei.
