Hi Gordon, can I ask for your help?

It’s my pleasure. What’s up?

I received an email from my bank today morning. It stated that there was an overpayment transaction on my account.

Did you check with the bank?

Not yet. I initially felt very odd. I was also afraid and then logged in my account immediately.

Do you transfer money frequently online?

Yes. I usually pay bills and transfer money to my friends. However, those transactions are only in small amount.

Did you find any suspicious issue?

After logging in my account, the balance and transaction details were normal. I did not know why the bank sent me such email before.

Can you tell me the content of the email?

It stated that the bank would like to verify my transaction and inform me to log in my account by clicking the link at the email.

Oh my god! Was a link provided for your login?

Yes. It was very convenient and the link was just embedded into the email.

Did you click on it?

Of course, why not? It’s so straight forward. I clicked on the link direct.

What did you find out?

It showed the bank’s website and then I entered my personal information straightly.

You meant that you’ve input your username and password of your online banking via the hyperlink.

Certainly. It’s exactly the same as the flow of logging in my online banking.

If it’s the case, you may have become the victim of payment fraud.

Are you serious? I did not think that there was any problem. Such alerting email pushed me to respond quickly. I did not read it in detail.

You may not be aware of the various kinds of scams recently.

What do you mean? Was I fooled?

I guessed that it was a fake communication from an untrustworthy source.

How come? It was a formal email sent from the bank.

How did you know and can you prove it?

The email displayed an official-looking banking logo and the content was professional. It’s impossible for a fake email.

You was too naïve. You assumed that it was sent from your trusted bank. The objective of such email was to steal your money.

How could the scammer know my bank’s details?

The scammer might be able to find on your social networking pages. The information is now so open that everyone can navigate social media platforms to understand more on your daily routine and preference.

Should I inform my bank for investigation?

Of course. The link embedded should be a spoofed website which appeared to be the bank’s own genuine website.

Are you kidding? It looked like real to me. I cannot believe it.

Did you hear of a phishing email?

I’ve no idea of it. What’s it about?

The email communication seems genuine. However, it’s a very good fake.

The purpose of the phishing email is to trick people into typing sensitive information into a website that looks like the site of a genuine company. The excuses used by the scammers may include investigating possible fraud on your account and asking for details to investigate further.

It would be especially serious for a bank website. The scammers would like to take over your bank account. Your money might be taken from your account by a scammer who got your sensitive login details including username and password.

It’s so disgusting. What should I do now?

As you’ve handed over sensitive information, please immediately change your password of your online banking for blocking the access by the scammer.

Oh No! Please wait and I change it now. I’m in big trouble.

Your username and password are the digital keys and they’re as important as the physical key of your house.

The fake website will capture your input. Once getting your digital keys, the scammer can access your account and perform transactions on behalf of you. Some of the banks have aggressively educated their customers that they would not ask customers to provide sensitive personal information via emails with embedded hyperlink.

I received similar messages before. However, I was not aware of its underlying severity.

Please be reminded to access online banking via bank’s official website address.

I’ve already changed my password. It’s lucky that my account’s balance is still normal.

It’s really good. You should not be suffered in fraud losses.

There were an increasing number of bank scams appearing in many different forms in the past two years. They’re getting more sophisticated. In order to safeguard your hard-earned money, you should keep abreast of latest tricks and new technology.

In addition to overpayment, any other common types of scams?

There are so many. I can give you another examples. You may receive an email informing you that you’ve got a lottery win. In order to make the claim, you’re required to provide your account details via the link provided at the email.

Too bad! It’s driven by the greediness.

You may also receive an email stating that your insurance has not been paid on time. In order to get the full protection, you’re required to click on the link and make the transfer direct via the email immediately.

It’s driven by the urgency.

You may also receive an email highlighting that there will be a charitable event. It may be triggered by the sympathy and you’ll donate money direct via the fake website.

It’s truly related to psychological factor such as mercy.

Last but not the least, you may also receive an email informing that you’ll be guaranteed for a work by an employment agency. To complete the process, you’re required to provide your account details for paying the service fee at the email.

There’s no doubt that the fraudsters are so creative.

Consequently, the scammers will make fraudulent purchases or open new accounts in their name.

Digital keys should be properly safeguarded by each individual. If not, there may be serious financial losses and exposure of personal confidential information. It’s not due to misfortune but the ignorance and lack of sensitivity of online fraud.

People may think that they’ll not be deceived. However, the surge in bank scams continue. Please stay vigilant and ensure that your financial information is secure by adopting extra care of personal digital keys. If you receive those emails in the future, please delete them instantly.

Thank you so much. I’ll take note of it.

Let’s catch up later. See you!
